First Grade
Bible
The BIBLE is the cornerstone of Hollywood Christian. We will begin each day with a Bible lesson and our memory verse for the week. There will be an oral test on Friday over the Bible verse and a written test over the weeks Bible lesson.
Spelling
The students will have a weekly spelling list. There will be a trail test on Wednesday and a final test on Friday. The trial test will be sent home on Wednesday. Any student earning a 100% on Wednesday will not have to take the test on Friday. (A spelling list for the year is provided in the First Grade Welcome Folder). Spelling will begin on August 31st.
Phonics-The students will review and develop further knowledge of their vowels (Long/short) consonants, blends, and various special sounds. There will be a weekly phonics test covering the phonics rules and special sounds we have been working on in class.
Language
The students will develop an understanding of the parts of speech and how to express themselves in written form.
Penmanship-The students will continue to develop their manuscript writing skills along with developing their cursive skills. There will be a weekly test over the cursive letters we are working on in class.( A cursive writing chart is provided in the First Grade Welcome Folder.)
Math
The students will work with addition, subtraction, measurement, money, telling time, counting by 1, 2, 3, 5, 10's, along with many other math concepts. A chapter test will be given at the end of each chapter. (A chart with the addition and subtraction math families is provided in the First Grade Welcome Folder.)
Reading
The students will be working on their oral and comprehensive reading skills. They will have a nightly reading assignment beginning the 3rd week of school. The pages to be read will be written in their weekly homework pad. We will be participating in several reading programs during the school year. Information on these programs will be sent home at a later date.
Reading
The students will have homework on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The students are to complete their homework on first grade writing paper. (A sample of the paper has been provided in the First Grade Welcome Folder.) The paper can be purchased at ACE or Get Smart School Supply store. If your student stays for aftercare please be sure that they have paper and pencils in their book bag for homework time.
PE, Spanish, Computer, Library, Art and Music
The students will participate in these special classes on a weekly base.
